The Agile Methodology and DevOps

Both the Agile methodology and DevOps emerged from the need for organizations to have more and more flexibility in delivering value to customers, following technological changes. The concept of an Agile model, based on shorter cycles and continuous value deliveries, emerged to break the rigidity of traditional models. The DevOps model, on the other hand, favors organization, gradual evolution and bases its concept on constant communication between the areas of development (Dev) and process operation (Ops).

The implementation of DevOps practices presupposes the adoption of the Agile model. However, DevOps did not cause a model break, but a way to use the same concept, combining flexibility, testing routines, communication, monitoring schemes, use of metrics and use of cloud computing, peculiarities of DevOps. In addition, the following stand out in the methodology: the simplification of processes; scalability; the empowerment of teams; automation; the rationalization of routines, as well as higher quality in deliveries, with reduced response time. 

If the Agile model gave rise to fast deliveries in line with customer expectations, DevOps has optimized this system. Therefore, more than comparing methodologies, it is worth noting the positive results obtained from the combination of them. 

Figures from The State Of Agile 2017: Agile At Scale, produced by Forrester, indicated that, at the time:

• at least 40% of organizations already joined the two practices;
• within this portion, 83% achieved greater efficiency in delivery; 
• 88% had more frequent launches and faster financial return;
• 64% claimed to have improved the technical quality of their processes.

At DevOps, the valorization of teams contributes to a constant updating of knowledge, facilitating the quick identification and resolution of problems. The model requires a change in organizational culture that creates a mindset based on autonomy, integration, good performance, good management and information sharing, always aiming at better experiences for users.
