We should not forget our beginner's spirit

The Japanese proverb teaches that when we experience the beginnings of experiences, whether in careers or in relationships, we have a freshness that inspires us and motivates us to give our best. With its human and timeless character, it suggests an excellent strategy to be followed in our days.

The ancient eastern wisdom is often transmitted through simple and metaphorical words that, in the form of sayings and proverbs, transmit teachings to all people and apply to various situations. Transmitted from generation to generation, they suggest strength, serenity, resilience and self-knowledge. Today, not so profound or wise, there are countless pieces of advice that, perhaps due to the drastic changes in the digital world, guide us to improve our quality of life, to be attentive and to take advantage of these changes. In other ways, they reinforce millenary concepts and encourage us not to let the enthusiasm and the flame go out. But, in practical life, what is this flame? And what factors drive us forward?

Don't fade, here's the advice! However, which way to go when we find ourselves totally apathetic in the face of our routine? We must follow the arrows that point us towards the new or, on the contrary, try to discover the new in what we already know, challenging ourselves, in order to maintain the interest in discovering, the freshness of what has always promised us to be a richer and more pluralistic life. ? What seems to happen is that, safe in a comfort zone, we unconsciously repeat the same actions, without the courage to face changes. And at that moment, a feeling of accommodation and even stagnation can arise that makes us discouraged in the face of activities that used to give us pleasure. That's when routine sets in and nothing seduces us anymore. If in personal life, stagnation can be a choice, in the corporate environment this can result in the denial of a future that justifies and compensates for an entire trajectory already traveled.

To maintain the beginner's spirit, habits and concepts need to be reconsidered from time to time, new ways to approach old questions be sought. Intensity, direction and persistence are seen by some theorists as fundamental elements for motivation. Intensity refers to the effort spent, persistence, time dedicated to achieving the goal and direction refers more specifically to the tastes, skills and personalities of each one, which demonstrates how much self-knowledge can help to overcome the challenges we face and the limits we certainly have. Between renewal and balance, successful people stand out from those who give up, because motivation only exists when we see meaning in what we do. What's the benefit? How much can I add, how much can I evolve, how much can I help by sharing what I learn every day?

In all the areas in which we operate, it is important to have a clear reason for carrying out certain tasks, for dedicating ourselves to them. There needs to be an identity. Therefore, from time to time, it is worth asking ourselves if what we do still makes sense. More than that, if it makes sense to other people, it causes an impact, generates recognition, adds value. Also, it's good to diversify skills, stimulate our brain, step out of the comfort zone. Having performance feedback can redirect us to actions that give greater relevance to our work. And finally, we must conquer our autonomy. Not just to do what we want, but so that our choices are based on the knowledge we have.

Running away from standards and with creativity, we will be able to do our best and persist in the tireless search for fulfillment and a sense of belonging. Our main motivation in starting careers or relationships is the desire to learn. Discover more about work or about each other, grow, mature. This curiosity is the driving force, it is the flame. And, as the proverb goes, if the beginner's flame goes out, the motivation fades. Meaning is lost and, with it, vigor and productivity. Here, then, is the secret: learn, relearn with mistakes and successes, redefine routes, experience the waves of success, be an eternal apprentice!
